3. Ransomware Protection
- This is one of the most important differences in a modern backup strategy.
- A backup is only useful if attackers cannot simply delete or compromise it alongside production data.
- Azure Backup includes security capabilities designed to protect recovery data from accidental and malicious deletion. Soft delete retains deleted backup data for a configurable period, while immutable vaults can prevent recovery points from being deleted or modified before their retention period expires.
- Traditional backup can achieve similar protection, but the organisation must design and maintain the security architecture itself.
4. Geographic Resilience
- Keeping backup data in the same location as production systems creates a potential single point of failure.
- Traditional environments therefore often require additional off-site infrastructure or replication to another location.
- Azure Backup supports different storage redundancy options, including locally redundant storage (LRS), zone-redundant storage (ZRS), and geo-redundant storage (GRS). The appropriate option depends on the organisation’s recovery and resilience requirements.

Whether you choose Azure Backup, traditional backup, or a hybrid approach, technology alone does not create a resilient recovery strategy.
A strong backup architecture should answer:

- How frequently should it be backed up?
- How long should backups be retained?
- Where should backup copies be stored?
- Who can delete or modify them?
- How will ransomware affect recovery?
- How quickly does each workload need to be restored?
- When was the last successful recovery test?
These questions determine whether your backup strategy can actually support the business during a disruption.
